California Senate Passes Landmark Bill to Regulate Fast Food Industry

CA Assembly Bill 257 is the nation's first of its kind. Dubbed the Fast Food Recovery Act, it would create a Fast Food Council to establish standards for wages, hours and working conditions at restaurant chains with more than 100 locations, such as Starbucks, Chipotle, and McDonald's. The 10-member council would include workers, company representatives, and government officials and have the power to increase the industry minimum wage to $22 in 2023. Governor Gavin Newsom has until September 30 to sign or veto the bill.

Copenhagen wins again this year as Geranium is named the #1 restaurant in the world by The World's 50 Best organization. Noma, from the same city, held that spots for years, before pivoting during the pandemic. The #2 spot was claimed by Central in Lima, Peru, while Disfrutar in Barcelona, Spain followed at #3. Honorable mentions in the US include New York's Atomix (#33) and Le Bernardin (#44), as well as SingleThread in Healdsurg, CA (#50).
2022 James Beard Chef And Restaurant Award Winners Announced

But wait, there's more! The James Beard Foundation also revealed its 2022 Chef and Restaurant Award winners this month. Standouts include Mashama Bailey (pictured above) for Outstanding Chef, Chai Pani for Outstanding Restaurant, and Cúrate for Outstanding Hospitality. The last two restaurants are both located in Asheville, North Carolina, and Chef Bailey's restaurant, The Grey, is in Savannah, Georgia. Dining tip if you're traveling in the area this summer! Michelin DC Announces 2022 Star Restaurant And Bib Gourmand Awards

The nation's capital is twinkling this month. Michelin released its latest list of Washington DC starred restaurants and Bib Gourmand awards, the latter for "good quality, good value" establishments. A few local culinary professionals also received special awards, and new restaurants such as Reverie and Albi earned their first stars ever.
Food Delivery Apps Slump As Americans Return To In-Person Dining

Data from Technomic reveals that in-person dining hit a post-pandemic high in the first quarter of 2022, while food-app delivery fell to its lowest level since the fourth quarter of 2020. The decline in app usage can also be attributed to fees, tips, and higher food prices as Americans have become increasingly budget-conscious amid rising inflation and higher fuel costs. As a result, the stock values of DoorDash and Uber have fallen by 62% and 29%, respectively, since last November.
