Compared to prices in March, wholesale tea leaves currently cost 50% more, liquid teas cost 9.6% more, and packaged tea bags cost an additional 1.7%. Prices have been driven up by pandemic related lockdowns and restrictions all along the tea supply chain from harvesting to shipping. According to a Reuters report, “Five countries – China, India, Kenya, Sri Lanka and Vietnam – account for 82% of global tea exports, but strict restrictions on movement to contain the coronavirus pandemic have already disrupted the key leaf-picking season, delayed some shipments by about a month and triggered a spike in prices.” Demand for tea has also increased as consumers seek to prepare tea at home while remaining sheltered in place.
